Erectile Dysfunction & High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure and Erectile Dysfunction

High blood pressure (HBP or hypertension) is when, the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the blood vessels, is consistently too high.

High blood pressure, otherwise known as hypertension, can contribute to erectile dysfunction (Erectile Dysfunction). Some of the medications used to treat high blood pressure can cause Erectile Dysfunction as well. About 30% of men with high blood pressure also have had Erectile Dysfunction. Finding a medication that treats high blood pressure without causing Erectile dysfunction treatment is a goal of many men.

The first step states learning about the relationships among Erectile Dysfunction, high blood pressure, and blood pressure medications. The primary way that high blood pressure cause harm is by increasing the workload of the heart and blood vessels — making them work harder and less efficiently. Over time, the force and friction of high blood pressure damages the delicate tissues inside the arteries. The more the plaque and more the damage increases, the narrower (smaller) the insides of the arteries become — raising blood pressure and starting a vicious circle that further harms your arteries, heart and the rest of your body. This can ultimately lead to other conditions ranging from arrhythmia to heart attack and even erectile dysfunction.

Over time, high blood pressure damages the lining of blood vessels and causes arteries to harden and narrow (atherosclerosis), limiting blood flow to Penis. This means less blood is able to flow to the penis. For some men, the decreased blood flow makes it difficult to achieve and maintain erections — often referred to as erectile dysfunction. The problem is fairly common. High blood pressure can also interfere with ejaculation and reduce sexual desire. Sometimes the medications used to treat high blood pressure have similar effects.

High blood pressure often has no signs or symptoms. But the impact on your sex life may be obvious. We provide a clinical strategy for the diagnosis and Erectile dysfunction treatment in India. A link between high blood pressure and sexual problems is proved in men. For women who have decreased sexual satisfaction, it’s not yet proved that high blood pressure is to blame or not!

High blood pressure and Erectile dysfunction treatment in India :-

High blood pressure damages your arteries. Over time, it can cause your arteries to become less flexible and narrow. This reduces your blood flow. Not only does it put you at risk of heart attack and stroke, it also limits the blood that circulates to your penis. Proper blood flow through the arteries is needed to get and maintain an erection.

High blood pressure’s effect on sexual problems in women isn’t well-understood. But it’s possible that high blood pressure could affect a woman’s sex life. It can reduce blood flow to the vagina. For some women, this leads to a decrease in sexual desire or arousal, vaginal dryness, or difficulty achieving orgasm. Improving arousal and lubrication can help.

If left untreated, high blood pressure can cause Erectile Dysfunction. However some drug treatments for high blood pressure can also impair sexual function and cause Erectile Dysfunction.

Blood pressure medication and Erectile Dysfunction

Most of the blood pressure drugs are more likely to lead to Erectile Dysfunction. If you learn which high blood pressure drugs are more likely to cause erectile dysfunction as a side effect, then you can talk with your doctor about them. This will help you get treatment that is best for you both in and out of the bedroom.

High blood pressure medications that can cause sexual dysfunction as a side effect include:

  • Water pills (diuretics).Diuretics can decrease forceful blood flow to the penis, making it difficult to achieve an erection. They can also deplete the body of zinc, which is necessary to make the sex hormone testosterone.
  • Beta blockers. These medications, especially older generation beta blockers such as propranolol (Inderal, Innopran XL), are commonly associated with sexual dysfunction.

To reduce the risk of side effects from these medications, including sexual problems, take medications erectile dysfunction treatment exactly as prescribed. If you still have side effects, talk to your doctor about other possible medications that may have fewer side effects.

HYPERTENSION INDUCED ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA –

Improper life-style and food habits, psychological stress factors like Atichinta (excess worry), Bhaya (fear), Krodha (anger), Alasya (dullness) etc., with or without genetic predisposition provokes and vitiates all the three Doshas to trigger the pathogenesis of hypertension. Though modern science considers hypertension as a disease, from the Ayurveda point of view it should be understood as the Prasaravastha (the spreading stage) of all the Doshas along with Rakta(blood) which circulate all over the body until they get lodged at a site of Kha-Vaigunya (site with some toxicity or abnormal function). This decides the organ of impact of the disease process (whether brain, heart, kidneys, eyes, blood vessels or sexual organ) leading to erectile dysfunction. With the help of recent advancements in the medical science the, diagnosis of this condition has been made possible at an early stage and thus effective management can be offered at this stage itself to avoid risk of damage to vital organs. Thus, hypertension can be understood as a psycho-somatic hemodynamic condition where Vata Pradhana Tridoshas are vitiated affecting the Rasa-Rakta Dhatus as Dooshyas with both Sarva Shareera (whole body) and Manas (mind) as its Adhisthana (site) life sexual organs. For effective management of hypertension and its associated disorders, lifestyle modifications should be given more emphasis and if necessary appropriate drug therapy should also be given.

By making healthy lifestyle choices, you can lower your blood pressure and potentially improve your sex life. Healthy lifestyle choices include:

  • Not smoking or using tobacco
  • Eating healthy foods
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Reducing the amount of salt in your diet
  • Losing extra pounds
  • Exercising regularly

Of course, a leaner body can boost your confidence and help you feel more attractive, which could also improve your sex life.

MANAGEMENT OF HYPERTENSION AND ITS INDUCED ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION-

Ayurveda gives more emphasis to the prevention and promotion of the health. Avoiding etiological factors of disease is considered as the first line of management. In the management of hypertension and other disorder like erectile dysfunction caused by it, non-pharmacological methods such as correction of lifestyle, diet etc. is proven to reduce the risk of heart disease which in turn lowers its associated erectile dysfunction. These include the harmonious living pattern by a deeper understanding of human life and its interaction with nature. Adopting Ayurveda guidelines may be helpful to reduce the increasing incidence and management of lifestyle disorders which include hypertension and erectile dysfunction. While treating this condition Prasara Avastha(spreading stage) of all the Tridosha and Rasa, Rakta and Meda Dushti should be taken in to consideration and along with lifestyle modifications, appropriate Vata Anulomana (maintaining normal course of Vata) Tridoshahara (normalizing all Tridosha), and Rasa, Rakta Prasadakar (blood purifying), Medohara (reducing excess fat) Chikitsa may be adopted.
